Kelly Care & Co. is a compassionate care provider dedicated to supporting individuals and families across their community. Their team delivers person-centred care services rooted in dignity, respect, and inclusion. As part of their commitment to ensuring information is accessible to everyone including clients, staff, and families, Kelly Care & Co wanted to review their website to ensure it offered a barrier-free experience for individuals with sight loss.
Accessibility is closely connected to the organisation’s values. With personal lived experience of sight loss within their team, they were keen to ensure their digital presence reflected best practice and met the needs of all users.
Kelly Care & Co commissioned Vision for Access to carry out a full website accessibility audit, with a focus on accessibility for individuals with sight loss. While their website already showed strong foundations including excellent colour contrast, plain-language content, a fully responsive design, and accessible forms, the organisation wanted specialist guidance to identify any outstanding barriers for individuals with sight loss.
Using a range of assistive technologies, including JAWS, magnification software, and keyboard-only navigation, the audit explored how individuals with sight loss experience the site in real-world scenarios. Several key issues were identified, including missing alt text on images, contrast failures caused by the fixed navigation bar, and content skipped by screen readers due to incorrect programmatic structure.
These findings highlighted where improvements were needed to increase usability, consistency, and equal access.
We carried out a comprehensive accessibility audit focusing on the needs of people with sight loss.
Our process included:
Kelly Care & Co received a detailed accessibility report outlining each issue, its impact on users, and clear recommendations for improvement.
These included:
The organisation has already begun implementing these recommendations, with its Marketing Manager updating the website and associated materials based on the audit
findings.
By acting on these changes, Kelly Care & Co. is strengthening the accessibility of its digital content for individuals with sight loss, supporting inclusive practice across its services, and ensuring everyone can engage confidently and independently with the information it provides.
“As an organisation, it is deeply important to us that everyone in our community – regardless of ability – can easily access, understand, and engage with the information and support we provide. Accessibility is not just a compliance goal for us; it’s a reflection of our values of inclusion, dignity, and respect.
Having a close family member who is registered blind, and another who is partially sighted, has given us first-hand insight into the challenges that individuals with visual impairments face when navigating online information and services. This personal experience has shaped our approach to communication and accessibility across every aspect of our organisation.
We are actively working to ensure that our website, digital content, and printed materials are formatted and designed in a way that supports accessibility for all users. This includes using clear contrasts, screen-reader-compatible formatting, alt text for images, and plain-language information to support readability and understanding.
Following the recent accessibility audit and the detailed report provided by Vision for Access CIC, our Marketing Manager has implemented the recommended changes and improvements to our website and associated materials. These updates have enhanced the user experience for people with visual impairments and strengthened our overall accessibility compliance.
Education and understanding are at the heart of what we do. We are committed to continually learning, adapting, and improving – not only within our leadership team but across all levels of our workforce. By engaging with Vision for Access CIC, we are seeking to strengthen our understanding through expert feedback, shared knowledge, and practical guidance to help us meet the highest possible accessibility standards.
We view this collaboration as an ongoing process, not a one-off exercise. Our goal is to
create a fully inclusive environment where our clients, families, and staff can access the information and care they need with confidence and independence.”
